Tina Chakarian: Advancing Armenian Art on the Global Stage at the Venice Biennale

Boston-based multidisciplinary artist and designer Tina Chakarian has been a driving force in elevating Armenian art and culture on the global stage, particularly through her leadership at the Venice Biennale—the world’s most prestigious art and cultural event. Since 2018, as Development Director for the Armenian Pavilion, Chakarian has played a critical role in fundraising, curating selections, overseeing installations, and coordinating events.

The 2025 Biennale’s theme, Intelligens: Natural. Artificial. Collective, set by renowned architect Prof. Carlo Ratti, challenges nations to explore intelligence as a multifaceted force. Chakarian’s vision brings together artists and architects from Armenia and the Diaspora, showcasing how their lived experiences and innovative works uniquely address the Biennale’s theme.

Chakarian’s goal is clear: to lead Armenia toward winning another Golden Lion, the Biennale’s highest honor. Armenia achieved this milestone in 2015 with the groundbreaking Armenity exhibition, exploring national identity. Chakarian, part of the advisory team at the time, brings a wealth of experience in mentoring talent and building bridges between the Republic of Armenia and its Diaspora.

By championing Armenia’s participation in the Biennale, Chakarian not only elevates Armenian artists but also secures a legacy of visibility, legitimacy, and recognition for Armenian cultural heritage. Her work ensures that Armenia remains an influential voice in global art, preserving its heritage while investing in future generations of creators.

Chakarian’s efforts go beyond curating exhibitions. She is establishing an endowment to secure Armenia’s permanent presence at future Venice Biennales, ensuring Armenian artists have ongoing opportunities to showcase their work and engage in global cultural dialogue. This initiative will foster emerging talent, document Armenia’s contributions to contemporary art, and position Armenian culture as a vital voice in the international art community.
