The second meeting of the regional cooperation platform in the “3+3” format (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia + Russia, Turkey, Iran) may take place in the coming months, the Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Fourth CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) Department, Denis Gonchar, said in an interview on December 10.
“Currently, the organisational modalities for holding the second “3+3” meeting are being worked out. We hope that it will take place in the coming months. Judging by the mood of all participants, an invitation could be sent to Georgia as well,” the diplomat stated.
According to him, the Russian Federation is convinced of the demand for the regional platform to expand mutually beneficial cooperation between the participating countries.
Earlier, the leaders of Azerbaijan and Turkey, Ilham Aliyev and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, came up with the initiative of the six-sided format of cooperation on Artsakh and the unblocking of economic and transport ties in the South Caucasus. Russia and Iran welcomed the idea, while Georgia announced that it did not plan to participate in this regional initiative and offered its own format of negotiations between Baku and Yerevan to maintain peace in the form of a “troika”. On December 10, 2021, the first meeting of the “3+3” platform at the level of deputy foreign ministers was held in Moscow.
