Bayram Mammadov was formerly arrested for vandalizing the statue of current Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s father and former head of Azerbaijani state Heydar Aliyev, by writing “Happy Slaves’ Day” on it. His charges were “drug possession,” something Mammadov has, according to him, been forced to confess. Amnesty International had labeled him as a prisoner of conscience. Earlier yesterday, his body was retrieved from the sea, which was the result of what seems to be Mammadov trying to “retrieve his slippers,” according to police reports. BBC Turkey reported a police investigation is ongoing.
