Geghard Monastery Listed in Lonely Planet’s 120 of World’s Most Amazing Buildings

The Geghard Monastery in Armenia has been listed among Lonely Planet’s 120 brilliant buildings, a selection that stretches from must-see classics to contemporary marvels. The name “Geghard” refers to the spear that wounded Christ.

The monastery began as a small cave chapel, which Gregory declared held a sacred spring in the 4th century with looming cliffs and the Azat river gorge became the ecclesiastical and cultural center of medieval Armenia.

Other architectural masterpieces on the list include the Sydney Opera House, Petra in Jordan, Lincoln Cathedral in England, Shah Mosque in Iran, and others.
