We Are Our Mountains

Crafting a masterpiece that captures a nation’s deep bond with its homeland and its people requires an extraordinary level of skill and artistic prowess. One such example of Armenian artistry is the monument titled ‘We Are Our Mountains’ (Մենք ենք, մեր սարերը), deliberately designed without a pedestal as it seamlessly merges with its natural landscape. Proudly serving as a guardian of national-patriotic ideals, ‘We Are Our Mountains’ continues to symbolise the unbreakable connection between Artsakh and its people.
Affectionately referred to as ‘Grandma and Grandpa’ (‘Tatik-Papik’) by Armenians, this iconic design—carved into red tuff—stands at the entrance of Stepanakert, the capital of Artsakh. The visionary behind this creation is none other than Sargis Baghdasaryan (1923-2001), a revered figure in the world of sculpture. Holding the distinguished title of People’s Artist of Armenia, and a recipient of Armenia’s State Prize, Baghdasaryan’s artistic genius shines through every facet of this renowned and beloved monument. Together with architect Yuri Hakobyan, Baghdasaryan unveiled his magnum opus on November 1st, 1967.
