200 years ago, the Pope donated a mediaeval Armenian manuscript to the University of Bologna

The University of Bologna was founded in 1077 and is considered the oldest university in Europe. It has a chair of Armenian Studies, headed by Professor Anna Shirinyan.
During the academic conference “Armenia: the Country of Millennia”, philologist Khachik Harutyunyan made speeches on the unique Armenian handwritten gospel kept in Jerusalem and at the Armenian University of Bologna.
Harutyunyan mentioned that “the Armenian community of Jerusalem is the oldest of our communities, and it is essential that this Centre of Armenian Studies speaks about the history of the Armenians”.
The 17th-century Armenian manuscript kept at the University belongs to the School of Constantinople. It has magnificent illustrations and was donated to the University 200 years ago by Pope Benedict XIV.
