Strengthening Armenian Communities: A Proven Model for Collective Impact

DiasporArm’s mission is to identify and mobilize key resources within the Armenian diaspora, foster synergy through networking, and, wherever possible, establish a framework that enables coordinated action.
With this aim in mind, we have launched an initiative to propose a model supporting the social, economic, educational, and cultural needs of our diaspora communities.

Among other diaspora models, we have taken inspiration from the successful model of the Jewish diaspora, where independent foundations in each city or country focus exclusively on fundraising and resource distribution.  This separation allows these organizations to remain committed to supporting community needs without becoming involved in the direct management of those initiatives.

This approach has proven highly effective and provides key takeaways, including:

Centralized Fundraising: A unified approach to fundraising alleviates the burden on individual organizations while allowing for detailed tracking of each community member’s contributions.
Transparent Governance: Foundations are managed by boards of trustees, ensuring transparent oversight and the regular presentation of financial reports.
Impressive Fundraising Outcomes: This structure enables the raising of substantial sums. For example, $160 million in Los Angeles, $203 million in San Francisco, and $189 million Canadian dollars in Montreal were raised to support community projects.
Efficient Allocation: Funds are allocated wisely among others to education, social services, cultural activities, and global Jewish organizations. In Montreal, for instance, 32.3% of the total funds (approximately $60 million CAD) is dedicated to global organizations.

Here are a few pages from the 2023 Annual Report of the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal, which further illustrates this impactful model.

We are eager to meet knowledgeable and experienced independent thinkers in different communities, to suggest the above-mentioned benchmarks and brainstorming if and how they can be adapted to the unique needs of Armenian diaspora communities worldwide.

We welcome ideas, expertise, and collaboration as we work toward a more dynamic, resilient Armenian diaspora.
